When I first wrote on this topic in 2009, it went viral globally and became a rally cry for seniors. Well, here it is, 14 years later, and although age discrimination is on the decline, it still poisons us. So here\u2019s a much-needed reminder \u2013 and update \u2013 \u201c60 for 60\u201d \u2013 to help you fight the beast.<\/p>\n

We all know it exists, but why are you letting yourself get pushed around? Why are you not fighting back? You are eminently employable, but it seems you\u2019re surrendering because you\u2019ve forgotten what your value is. Maybe this will be the reinforcement you need. Here\u2019s \u2026<\/p>\n

Sixty for Sixty \u2013 60 reasons\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

1. I\u2019m a boomer. We have that famous work ethic.<\/p>\n

2. Boomers are the best team players in the workforce; we work well with others. That\u2019s not opinion; it\u2019s fact.<\/p>\n

3. We\u2019re also punctual.<\/p>\n

<\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n

4. I can be flexible when it comes to work schedules.<\/p>\n

5. At my age, I have an extensive network. I bring that with me.<\/p>\n

6. You want stability and continuity in your workforce? How \u2018bout this: hire me and I\u2019m likely to stay with you until I retire. That could be ten years or more. Try getting that from the Gen Y-ers you\u2019re interviewing.<\/p>\n

7. You want responsibility? I know how to hold down a job \u2013 done it for years. I pay taxes, feed a family, read newspapers, vote regularly, and have put a kid or two through college.<\/p>\n

8. While we\u2019re talking about being a parent, let me remind you: I have great mediation skills.<\/p>\n

9. And negotiation skills.<\/p>\n

10. And organizational skills.<\/p>\n

11. And budgeting and planning skills.<\/p>\n

12. Time management, too.<\/p>\n

13. Not to mention patience!<\/p>\n

14. Studies prove that honesty is a common value in boomers. That includes me.<\/p>\n

15. I can communicate. I went to school when they taught us how to write a complete sentence, for God sake. You know\u2026with nouns and verbs and capital letters and all that stuff. Remember those things? They\u2019re rare today, aren\u2019t they?<\/p>\n

16. And I don\u2019t cheat when I communicate \u2013 thx\u2026c u l8tr.<\/p>\n

17. Good communication means good listening skills. Boomers are known for that, too.<\/p>\n

18. I\u2019ve survived three (make that four) recessions, so I can help you make tough decisions.<\/p>\n

19. \u201cGood judgment comes from experience and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.\u201d (Will Rogers) I\u2019ve already been there and done that, or would you rather hire someone who will do that on your dime?<\/p>\n

20. Energy? Yeah, I still have lots of that.<\/p>\n

21. My eyesight may be going, but I have some pretty clear long-range vision.<\/p>\n

22. I may miss a day or two of work from time to time but not because\u2026like\u2026dude\u2026I\u2019m so NOT in the mood.<\/p>\n

23. All in all, older workers have lower absenteeism than younger workers.<\/p>\n

24. We have fewer injuries, too.<\/p>\n

25. I\u2019ve developed expertise that takes this long to develop. There are no shortcuts.<\/p>\n

26. I\u2019ve had my resume redone. Please read all of it. It\u2019s really impressive.<\/p>\n

27. My work experience is varied, which means I bring perspective and dimension.<\/p>\n

28. And resourcefulness.<\/p>\n

29. Because of all my experience, I can hit the ground running. My learning curve will be short.<\/p>\n

30. One out of every three workers in the civilian labor force is 50 or older. You don\u2019t have much choice anymore.<\/p>\n

31. In five years, nearly 40 percent of your candidates will be over 50. You\u2019ll have even less choice, so why not get with the program starting right now?<\/p>\n

32. And while we\u2019re on that subject, why don\u2019t you think about what it will be like when you get to 50? One day, you will. No getting around it.<\/p>\n

33. I won\u2019t be on my mart phone during meetings.<\/p>\n

34. No, I don\u2019t multitask. I pay attention instead. I can multitask as well as anyone, but I won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

35. However, I am multi-talented. After all these years, there are a lot of different things I\u2019ve learned to do.<\/p>\n

36. I won\u2019t be on Facebook on your computer at work. I\u2019m here to work.<\/p>\n

37. If I tell you that even though I\u2019ve had higher-level positions in my career but my career goals have changed and that I really do want this job you think I\u2019m \u201coverqualified\u201d for\u2026I\u2019m telling you the truth.<\/p>\n

38. I\u2019m not after your job.<\/p>\n

39. I\u2019m a natural mentor for your younger workers.<\/p>\n

40. It\u2019s not important or cool or necessary for me to come to work in a T-shirt. I could care less.<\/p>\n

41. My age group has proven to be dedicated. Dedicated workers are more productive and efficient, and that leads to cost savings for you.<\/p>\n

42. And talking about cost savings, many of us 50-somethings have health benefits from our spouses. I won\u2019t need it from you.<\/p>\n

43. I\u2019m a lifelong learner and I\u2019ll be happy to take all the professional development courses you want me to.<\/p>\n

44. Older workers are loyal. We appreciate our jobs and will prove it by the way we work.<\/p>\n

45. Older workers are far less political. Our agenda is taking pride in our work.<\/p>\n

46. I am detail-oriented, as many of us boomers are. It\u2019s how we were brought up.<\/p>\n

47. I will set a good example for all your employees, young and old(er).<\/p>\n

48. I know what customer service is. I was at it when it was more than just 800-numbers and www.dontbotherme.com. (Read that one slowly.)<\/p>\n

49. I can think on my feet. How do you think I got to be this age anyway?<\/p>\n

50. Grey hair is actually beautiful.<\/p>\n

Got it?<\/p>\n

Fourteen years and two recessions later\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n

51. Remember the Great Recession of \u201909 and the pandemic panic of \u201920? I helped my company steer through both of them. That\u2019s a lot of critical decision making.<\/p>\n

52. I stuck with my company through thick and thin \u2013 mostly thin \u2013 since the pandemic struck. The latest generation changed jobs three times since then.<\/p>\n

53. When you start using AI seriously, you\u2019re going to need good critical thinkers. That comes and improves with age.<\/p>\n

54. I may not be able to play shortstop on the company softball team, but I\u2019ve coached my kid and organized little league for 10 years. I hereby volunteer.<\/p>\n

55. And speaking of that, I have a 45-year track record of saying, \u201cYeah, I\u2019ll do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

56. I\u2019ve stopped counting body parts that don\u2019t work anymore and now count the ones that still do. My brain is one of them.<\/p>\n

57. I surely won\u2019t get a mid-morning call from the school nurse that my kid is throwing up and I have to leave the office. My kids are 36 and 32 and can take care of themselves, thank you.<\/p>\n

58. I\u2019m on Medicare. Don\u2019t need your plan. That\u2019ll save you\u2026what\u20268, 10 grand?<\/p>\n

59. I\u2019m not looking for free lunches and snacks. With all the things I shouldn\u2019t eat any more, it\u2019s a non-starter.<\/p>\n

60. Go back to work in the office three days a week? Oh, Yay!<\/p>\n
