According to Simon Sinek, who first popularized the concept in his 2014 Ted Talk and book, <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Start-Why-Leaders-Inspire-Everyone\/dp\/1591846447\">Start With Why<\/em>, it\u2019s \u201cthe compelling higher purpose that inspires us and acts as the source of all we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s closely related to the concept of \u201cikigai,\u201d the Japanese word meaning a \u201clife purpose.\u201d Ikigai refers to defining your personal meaning of life in relation to your talents, passions, and profession, as well as what you can give to the wider world.<\/p>\n<p>To find your \u201cWhy\u201d statement, reflect on your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and habits. Specifically, consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your values &#8211; What are your core beliefs?<\/li>\n<li>Your motivations &#8211; What excites you and compels you to tackle action?<\/li>\n<li>Your passions &#8211; What are you most curious about that consumes your mind?<\/li>\n<li>Your strengths &#8211; What are your natural talents, abilities, and skill sets?<\/li>\n<li>Your career path &#8211; What common threads exist among your roles and environments where you felt most fulfilled and productive?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>Your \u201cWhy\u201d acts as a personal mission statement and<strong> <\/strong>includes your priorities and why you do what you do. It\u2019s your higher calling and helps you prioritize how you spend your time and energy on what matters most. And most importantly, it gives meaning to the work you do.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three reasons why finding your \u201cWhy\u201d is the key to career happiness:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">1. It gets you unstuck.<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling stuck in your career, likely, you\u2019re not fully embracing your why statement. You\u2019ll feel unmotivated, frustrated, and stagnant because you\u2019re not tapping into the work that gives you meaning. When this happens, reflecting on your \u201cWhy\u201d statement can be the catalyst to see and take action on the changes needed to get you back on track.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">2. It keeps you focused on what matters most.<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to be swayed by the promise of a larger paycheck, stock options, or fancy title, but ultimately those come with a cost if they fall outside your ikigai. Finding your higher purpose reminds you to stay focused on what matters most and only pursue roles supporting your goals and, therefore, your long-term happiness.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">3. It helps you evaluate opportunities.<\/h2>\n<p>When you evaluate opportunities through the lens of your overarching theme, you\u2019ll easily be able to tell if they align with your intrinsic motivation. If they do, you\u2019ll know you should definitely pursue them. If they don\u2019t, it\u2019s probably better to pass on them.<\/p>\n<p>This exercise is also helpful when reflecting on past roles to connect the dots on why something was a great fit (or not), reinforcing your understanding of your \u201cWhy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Remember, it\u2019s hard to be happy when you feel disconnected in your career.
