Wasn\u2019t fair.<\/p>\n<p>Suggests this<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most beneficial caring fair leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ask anyone to describe the best boss they\u2019ve ever had. If they\u2019ve had a great one, they are likely to light up and say something like:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe cared about me as a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me what I wanted to do long term and then worked with me to build the strengths I needed to have to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s engrained. People gravitate towards people that care about them. If you want people to care about you, care about them. Get to know them as people. Get to know what matters to them, to their families, to the people they care about. Then let that inform the way you treat them.<\/p>\n<p>Fair is a hygiene factor. You don\u2019t get any extra credit for being fair. But you can\u2019t be the best if you\u2019re not fair.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">The most destructive unfair, uncaring leaders<\/h2>\n<p>Ask people to describe their worst boss. They\u2019ll physically retract as though expecting a blow. Then you\u2019ll hear stories like:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019d wait until the end of the day to give me long assignments due first-thing the next morning. Then he wouldn\u2019t look at them until the afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe kept changing her mind. I\u2019d do a bunch of work. Then she\u2019d decide it wasn\u2019t what she wanted and have me do it over in a completely different direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything I did was bad. He must have had something against me. If another colleague and I handed in the same work product, theirs was great and mine was rubbish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The thing about hygiene factors like being fair is that no one thinks about them if they are satisfied, but they overwhelm everything else if they\u2019re not satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>You have to be fair. You have to be perceived as fair. If not, people will run.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, \u201cfair\u201d is not the same as \u201cequal.\u201d You don\u2019t have to treat everyone the same. You should nurture and reward your high performers. Just make sure everyone understands the criteria you\u2019re using.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Fair, but uncaring leaders<\/h2>\n<p>Fair, but uncaring leaders don\u2019t really do much damage. But they don\u2019t do much good. They\u2019re perceived as disengaged. They don\u2019t inspire people. It\u2019s almost like they\u2019re not even there.<\/p>\n<p>The issue here is more opportunity cost than anything else. If the team didn\u2019t have a leader, it could self-manage or a natural leader might emerge. An uncaring leader prevents others from stepping up.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Caring, but unfair leaders<\/h2>\n<p>Caring, but unfair leaders are perceived as deceptive. They say the right things and then do the wrong things. People figure out pretty quickly that they are unfair and stop trusting them. And you can\u2019t lead without trust.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">How do you rate?<\/h2>\n<p>If you don\u2019t believe you need to be fair, stop reading now. I can\u2019t help you. You\u2019re playing a different game. Good luck to you. While unfair, uncaring leaders are downright destructive and unfair, caring leaders are deceptive, the difference is not material. No one\u2019s going to follow an unfair leader for very long.<\/p>\n<p>If you are fair, but either don\u2019t care or come across as uncaring, there\u2019s hope for you. You should care. Caring is good. Either make yourself care about the good you can do for others or how you can help people get better in your current role or find another role you do care about.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership is about inspiring, enabling and empowering others to do their absolute best together to realize a meaningful and rewarding shared purpose. Start with the purpose. Find an organization with a purpose you care about. Then find people to work with that you care about. Then you\u2019ll find it easy to care about inspiring, enabling and empowering them. They\u2019ll be happier.
