Wrong,\u201d she captioned the video which has captured over 340,000 viewers. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Save your energy for when you really need it<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYou teach people how to treat you,\u201d she began while explaining that your first few weeks in the role will set the precedent for your work capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So if you don\u2019t want your new boss to expect you to pull overtime shifts often or take on more than you can physically do in a working day, @badass.careers suggests avoiding signaling that you\u2019re up for that from the get-go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are pulling extra hours, saying yes to everything, going above and beyond, 110% straight out the gate, that\u2019s actually going to become your baseline normal,\u201d she warned. \u201cThat\u2019s damn hard to sustain.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"><\/figure>\n<p>Instead, she recommends setting out how you expect to continue by only putting in about 80% to 95% of your energy into the new job.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then you can dial up your efforts to 100% or more when you really need to. \u201cFor important presentations, or if your team is in crisis mode,\u201d @badass.careers says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re firing on all cylinders all of the time, you\u2019re just going to end up burned out. Protect your energy and you\u2019ll perform better at work [in the] long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Giving 100% early on: The pros and cons<\/h2>\n<p>The notion that new hires should reign in their efforts for career longevity resonated with many viewers who felt like they\u2019d over-delivered in previous new roles before getting burned out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOmg I always would go 110% at first to prove myself and then feel pressure to keep it up and not know how to turn it down,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wished i saw this 8 months ago when i started my new job,\u201d another chimed while adding that they have now been left struggling to impress their manager. \u201cI am told I am not performing \u201cat my capacity\u201d and \u201cinconsistently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pointed out that you\u2019re often expected to set higher targets as you progress\u2014so a new hire giving their all into a new role risks having to work harder than the upper limit they\u2019re already operating at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went with 100%, they asked for 150%, then 200% ,\u201d they explained. \u201cNow I\u2019m on 14, 16 hours a day [and] doing 2 managers\u2019 workload.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But others disagreed, insisting that making a good impression pays off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you start a new job, you are constantly under observation and this is the right time to demonstrate that you were the right person for that job,\u201d one user wrote, while another added: \u201cI got a promotion after 3 months by firing up straight away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to @badass.careers\u2019s theory, another user explained that putting in the work early on generated trust with their boss and actually enabled them to dial back their efforts over time\u2014rather than leading to the proverbial bar being set too high and eventually, burnout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found the 110% effort put in the first 6 months built the equity to come and go as needed without anyone batting an eyelid,\u201d they wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/06\/28\/new-hire-80-95-rule-new-job-tiktok-badass-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone wants to start a new job on the right foot, and for most new hires, this means putting your all into impressing the boss and proving your unwavering commitment for the first few weeks after onboarding.
