Oura is looking for a <em>Pleasantville<\/em> moment of its own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">The wearable fitness tech company recently debuted the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic, which is available in four new colors and made from zirconia ceramic, a departure from the brand\u2019s existing metal-forward colors. The product drop also comes alongside new multi-ring support capabilities, along with a new charging case, and additional health features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">To announce it all to the world, Oura rolled out a campaign across social media, traditional TV and CTV, and OOH activations in New York, LA, London, Berlin, and Helsinki, along with a series of \u201cvignettes\u201d called \u201cRing True to You\u201d that focus on a message of self-expression. It\u2019s all aimed at grabbing Gen Z and millennial consumers, which Oura CMO Doug Sweeny says marks a pivot from the brand\u2019s previous focus on men and older customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">\u201cWe wanted to get out of the clich\u00e9s of \u2018young people doing yoga\u2019 and [avoid] the tropes,\u201d Sweeny told Marketing Brew. \u201cWe wanted to broaden it up and talk about really living your best life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 dNbKdQ\">Show it off<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">Oura\u2019s \u201cRing True to You\u201d ad spot and the accompanying vignettes feature the new ring being worn by young people in a variety of scenarios, including a handshake between friends, drumming on a desk, and completing a new outfit. Rather than position the ring in what might be a more expected healthcare or athletic setting, Sweeny said that showing the product off in everyday life was a way to stand out from Oura\u2019s previous approach.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Oura Ring 4 Ceramic \u2014 Ring True To You\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ijxJXSNIcUM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">\u201cWhen we introduced smart rings, the technology or the product itself [fell] into the background. Like, it\u2019s on your body, but it\u2019s sort of discrete,\u201d Sweeny said. \u201cThis is a shift in that it\u2019s actually about expression, and it\u2019s about your own style.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">With this campaign and product, Oura is also looking to lean into the idea of tech as fashion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">\u201cWithin the smart-ring category, I think we\u2019re breaking new ground here,\u201d he said, noting that the ability to collect and wear multiple colors and styles of Oura rings stands out from other wearable fitness trackers that may not be as interchangeable. With the Oura Ring 4\u2019s colorful appearance, Sweeny said the campaign seeks to emphasize the visibility of the product, as opposed to some other tech-as-fashion products on the market that aim to blend in.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 dNbKdQ\">Online chatter<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">On social media, Oura is particularly focusing on TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram in an effort to reach a targeted youth audience. \u201cWe wanted to lean into the audience and where they show up,\u201d Sweeny said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"style__InlineSubscribeWrapper-sc-9b30af34-1 xBGLJ inline-subscribe\">\n<div id=\"inline-subscribe\" class=\"style__RoundedContainer-sc-bac6188c-0 jnRTsW\">\n<h5 class=\"inline-subscribe\">Get marketing news you&#8217;ll actually want to read<\/h5>\n<p class=\"inline-subscribe\">Marketing Brew informs marketing pros of the latest on brand strategy, social media, and ad tech via our weekday newsletter, virtual events, marketing conferences, and digital guides.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">This isn\u2019t the first time Oura has shown up on these platforms, but this campaign does feature a virtual try-on filter on Snapchat, which is the company\u2019s first foray into that kind of tech. The goal of that filter, Sweeny said, is to help show off the new multi-ring support capability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">The campaign comes a few months after Oura faced backlash for its connection to the software company Palantir, which creates military intelligence and surveillance tools, and its work with the Department of Defense, with critics wondering what that could mean for user data privacy. At the time, Tom Hale, Oura\u2019s CEO, responded to the concerns in a TikTok, stating that the company\u2019s work with the DoD and Palantir is separate from its consumer work, and saying that neither party has access to Oura user data. \u201cYour personal data never touches any government system, and nobody from Palantir or the government has access to your data, full stop,\u201d Hale says in the TikTok.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-1ef9199a-8 zNSXu\">Sweeny said the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic campaign was not designed in response to the controversy, and said he doesn\u2019t expect to see any lingering effects in the campaign\u2019s reception.
