{"id":21530,"date":"2024-09-14T22:11:24","date_gmt":"2024-09-14T22:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mysourcefunding.com\/?p=21530"},"modified":"2024-09-14T22:11:26","modified_gmt":"2024-09-14T22:11:26","slug":"google-exec-claimed-companys-goal-was-to-crush-other-networks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mysourcefunding.com\/?p=21530","title":{"rendered":"Google exec claimed company\u2019s \u2018goal\u2019 was \u2018to crush other networks\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">At an antitrust trial, it\u2019s probably not great when there\u2019s evidence shown in court of company executives talking about crushing the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">On the third day of the <em>United States vs. Google<\/em>, though, lawyers for the Department of Justice introduced remarks from David Rosenblatt, Google\u2019s former president of global display advertising, where he said just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">\u201cIf we execute\u2026we\u2019ll be able to crush other networks, and that\u2019s our goal,\u201d Rosenblatt said in a document from 2009, apparently describing the company\u2019s strategy around that time in internal notes shared with Google employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">Those notes also described Rosenblatt as saying, \u201cWe\u2019re both Goldman and the NYSE,\u201d comparing Google\u2019s ad tools to both an investment bank <em>and<\/em> a stock exchange. \u201cWe\u2019ll do to display what we did to search,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">Rosenblatt\u2019s remarks seemed to help make the DOJ\u2019s case for it as it argues that Google acted to monopolize the digital advertising ecosystem in its blockbuster case against the tech giant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">Or maybe it was just a simple metaphor, as Brad Bender, a former Google executive who oversaw the company\u2019s buy and sell side ad tech, suggested when he took the witness stand Wednesday. During the cross-examination of Bender, Google\u2019s lawyers pointed out that Rosenblatt worked at the company for less than a year and that he left shortly after making those remarks. (Rosenblatt was CEO of DoubleClick when it was acquired by Google in 2008 and joined the tech giant briefly at that time.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">As the trial continues, what exactly constitutes an \u201copen web display advertisement\u201d continues to be a point of contention between the prosecution and the defense, and on Wednesday, Google\u2019s lawyers asked Bender to explain how Google\u2019s ad-buying tools, like DV360, were integrated with platforms like YouTube and mobile ads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">In an extremely technical portion of the testimony that brought this reporter back to high school geometry-levels of boredom, the DOJ turned to expert witness R. Ravi, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, to break down how Google could win ad auction bids by offering discounts and surcharges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During Ravi\u2019s time on the stand, the court heard that Project Poirot, a Google initiative that the DOJ has argued lowered bids sent to rival exchanges, was so successful that Google\u2019s exchange saw ad spend jump 7%, while pulling spend from rival exchanges like Pubmatic (-30.2%), OpenX (-28.5%), and Rubicon (-9.9%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"style__InlineSubscribeWrapper-sc-f998fa3-1 eLdHEA inline-subscribe\">\n<div id=\"inline-subscribe\" class=\"style__Container-sc-6fdcc87e-0 style__RoundedContainer-sc-fdc976c-0 iTWzCH dtoEFc\">\n<h5 class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 hxLtlS inline-subscribe\">Get marketing news you&#8217;ll actually want to read<\/h5>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 lkyzwa inline-subscribe\">Marketing Brew informs marketing pros of the latest on brand strategy, social media, and ad tech via our weekday newsletter, virtual events, marketing conferences, and digital guides.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">Google has argued that concerns about spam, malware, and ad fraud are its justification for why it continues to keep its ad network exclusive to its ad exchange.Bender testified that Google wasn\u2019t impervious to fraud and spam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">Last on the witness stand Wednesday was Jed Dederick, chief revenue officer of The Trade Desk, who testified about challenges The Trade Desk has faced in the display market. Despite being the second-largest DSP, and among Google\u2019s most formidable competitors, it still failed to grow its display business at the same rate as other parts of its business, he said, due to Google\u2019s nearly impossible-to-surmount scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-9c73a528-12 brYTDW\">At this point in the trial, US District Court Judge Leonie M.
