Or who forces <em>her<\/em> solutions down your throat without awareness of what you want or what may work in your situation.<\/p>\n<p>Like telling you what you should say to your manager without knowing the dynamics of your relationship. Or taking time off work to give you company when you\u2019re sick even though all you want is to be left alone.<\/p>\n<p>When people don\u2019t know what we want, their caring can do more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>Well guess what? How we practice self-care isn\u2019t very different. Most of us go through routines prescribed by the self-care industry without checking with ourselves to see if it\u2019s what we really need. Weekly massages and scented candles are lovely for sure, but not always very helpful.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder that despite a global self-care industry worth almost $1.5 trillion and increasing, the rates of stress, burnout, depression and hopelessness continue to rise. We\u2019re wasting a ton of time, effort and money on products and services that may provide a temporary high but leave us right where we are.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>True self-care, writes creative laureate Mosley Wotta, is \u201cmethodically practicing the beautiful maintenance of showing up and attending to our neglected pains wherever they may be.\u201d Based on my research on women\u2019s flourishing, this is a two-fold practice that many women struggle with. Here\u2019s how to do it effectively.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\"><strong>Tune In to Yourself <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It begins with noticing when you\u2019re feeling out of sorts and turning to yourself to understand what you need. Emotions usually arise in clusters, and it takes compassionate attunement to get to the core of what\u2019s upsetting you.<\/p>\n<p>Those of us who grow up in homes where we\u2019re offered immediate solutions for our feelings (go eat something, you\u2019ll be okay) are disconnected with our emotions. And in homes where caregivers aren\u2019t able to help us manage our emotions, our ability to do so ourselves is compromised. Emotions feel scary, we learn to numb them instead of understanding what they want from us.<\/p>\n<p>Our rushed and head-centric societies don\u2019t help either. Those of us who live and work in high stress and high stakes environments get accustomed to running faster in the hopes that things will slow down at some point. However, none of us can keep running without stopping to check in with ourselves and tending to our needs and wants. It\u2019s biologically impossible.<\/p>\n<p>A good place to begin is simply by checking in with yourself when you\u2019re <strong>not<\/strong> feeling negative or frustrated. You can ask yourself simple questions like <em>What do I want to eat? Which movie do I want to watch?<\/em> You can then advance to slightly more complex situations and check in with yourself: <em>What\u2019s my body telling me about this situation?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In time, you\u2019ll be ready to tune in when you\u2019re feeling emotional, identify what you\u2019re feeling, and use the date to guide your self-care actions. Neuropsychologist Rick Hanson\u2019s classification of our three basic emotional needs can help: the need for safety, satisfaction, and connection.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\"><strong>Give Yourself Permission<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The other aspect of a nurturing self-care practice is being willing to give yourself what you need. While it may sound pretty self-evident, it isn\u2019t often so. For many of us, knowing how we\u2019re feeling or what we want comes with judgment and that overbearing voice in the head that says: <em>I shouldn\u2019t be feeling this way, <\/em>or<em> I shouldn\u2019t be asking for or doing that<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This too often has roots in childhood\u2014being told our feelings, needs or desires are selfish, unreasonable, or wrong in some way leads to a lifetime of judging our human emotions or not giving ourselves permission to honor the human in us.<\/p>\n<p>Judgment also stems from society, where cultural biases determine the expectations on women. This is way worse for working women who face myriad barriers to their advancement based on their gender. Overcoming these barriers for good begins with the inner work of understanding our own internal barriers, giving ourselves permission to feel and to want, and being our greatest advocate in honoring them.<\/p>\n<p>And while it\u2019s true that all feelings cannot be acted upon, owning them allows you to honor them in ways that are aligned with your values. For example, if you\u2019re feeling jealous of the colleague who always gets your manager\u2019s support, you may use that information as a reminder that you want the same for yourself. You can learn from her and see what she\u2019s doing right instead of believing the inner voice of <em>\u201cmy manager has favorites\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, while all desires cannot be honored, all needs are legitimate; when you own them, you can always find alternate ways to honor them. If you\u2019re feeling overwhelmed, for example, you could find relief in anything from changing your perspective on your situation, to reprioritizing your workload, to laying the groundwork for a career change down the road.<\/p>\n<p>So what are the permission slips do you need to write yourself? What will you allow yourself to feel, to need and to want?<\/p>\n<p>When you learn to take care of yourself at the most fundamental level, you can meet the challenges of our day and age, and rise to your highest potential with far greater joy, ease, and aliveness.<\/p>\n<p>Homaira Kabir is a confidence &amp; leadership coach with postgraduate research on women\u2019s flourishing.
