All you have to do is spend a few minutes on social media and it becomes very obvious we have a hard time talking with each other when we disagree, especially during these volatile times. In our conversations, we often fail to listen to the nuance in arguments, we jump to conclusions, and we sometimes enter them swinging.<\/p>\n

Milan Kordestani is trying to change the way we interact. His new book, I\u2019m Just Saying: A Guide to Maintaining Civil Discourse in an Increasingly Divided World<\/em>, <\/em>offers practical advice to increase understanding and listening. Here are eight strategies he recommends that I found particularly helpful:<\/p>\n

1) Engage In Self-Reflection<\/h2>\n

Take the time to think about issues, to reflect on how you feel about them, and to become self-aware. Self-reflection helps us have a greater sense of reason and a sound foundation for our contributions to conversations.<\/p>\n

2) Consider Your Tone<\/h2>\n

Tone \u2014 when engaging in conversation \u2014 is very important, especially when discussing heated topics. Kordestani\u2019s advice: Speak to people the way you want to be spoken to.<\/p>\n

3) Be An Active Listener<\/h2>\n

Practice listening fully and really taking in the conversation rather than focusing on what you are going to contribute or how you are going to \u201cput the other person in their place.\u201d<\/p>\n

4) Practice Sincerity<\/h2>\n

Enter conversations with a basic level of trust and sincerity. Kordestani shares, \u201cWhile trust is generally regarded as something that must be cultivated over time, you must show a willingness to have faith in others to engage in civil discourse \u2014 whether or not you truly know their intentions.\u201d<\/p>\n

5) Differentiate Discomfort<\/h2>\n

Consider the difference between \u201cdiscomfort caused by topics and discomfort caused by mistreatment.\u201d According to Kordestani, \u201cIf you need to step away from a conversation that doesn\u2019t feel safe, you should not feel afraid to do so.\u201d He advises that exiting uncivil discourse is a better approach than perpetuating it.<\/p>\n

6) Ask Why?<\/h2>\n

Ask thoughtful questions that increase your learning and demonstrate your openness to learning.<\/p>\n

7) Leave Your Bubble<\/h2>\n

Consider reading something that you wouldn\u2019t normally read, engage with people who are different from you, and don\u2019t become convinced that what you see on social media or hear in your friend group is what everyone is seeing or hearing.<\/p>\n

8) Employ Empathy<\/h2>\n

Try to see the issue from the other person\u2019s perspective. You might not always come to agreement, but most issues are nuanced and don\u2019t have absolute right or wrong answers.<\/p>\n

Kordestani ends his books by saying, \u201cYou can\u2019t change everyone\u2019s mind. You can\u2019t always find common ground.\u201d But he adds, that we can try, and with trying we can usually move closer to civil discourse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
