On the one hand, you need to show that you\u2019re human if you are to succeed in building enduring relationships with your people. Give too much away, however, and you could possibly harm your professional credibility. So, how can leaders manage the lines between their personal and professional personas?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">1. Help junior staff start their careers without a \u201cwork persona\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have a work persona as a way to guard against oversharing. \u201cMany people believe they need to adopt a separate \u2018business persona\u2019 at work from the point they get their first job,\u201d says Richard Vague, an entrepreneur, investor and author of <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Paradox-Debt-Prosperity-Without-Crisis\/dp\/1512825328\">The Paradox of Debt \u2013 A New Path to Prosperity Without Crisis<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He points out that the culture of many organizations can lead to people being formal and cautious in the workplace, for reasons of self-preservation. Nevertheless, he argues that it\u2019s preferable for people to be \u201cmore authentic, more fully themselves\u201d, but only as long as the environment is characterized by goodwill and respect. \u201cAnd a company can only achieve this if the boss exemplifies it,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">2. Use LinkedIn to create your authentic personal brand<\/h2>\n<p>The social media platform offers powerful opportunities to help leaders build their personal brand. If they want to represent themselves authentically, they should not just showcase professional accomplishments, but also share personal anecdotes and insights that reflect their true character, knowledge and experience.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinkedIn is not just a digital resume, it&#8217;s a space to tell your story,\u201d says Bianca Miller-Cole, co-author of <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.hachette.co.uk\/titles\/bianca-miller-cole\/rich-forever\/9781399807593\/\">Rich Forever \u2013 What They DIDN\u2019T Teach You about Money, Finance &amp; Investments in School<\/em><em>.<\/em> \u201cAt the end of the day, people buy from people they know, like and trust. So, does your profile articulate who you really are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Engagement is also critical since authenticity is not a one-way street, it&#8217;s a dialogue. \u201cLeaders should actively participate in conversations, share their opinions and listen to others,\u201d Miller-Cole advises. This not only humanizes their online persona, but also fosters meaningful connections \u2013 while establishing the individual as a thought leader in their space.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">3. Remember that personal situations tell your team a lot about your values<\/h2>\n<p>Imagine you receive an urgent family phone call during an important team presentation. You have two choices: do you pick it up or ignore it? \u201cEither choice sends a message to your team,\u201d says Olga Valadon, a corporate empathy expert and the founder of leadership, strategy and culture consultancy Change Aligned<strong>. \u201c<\/strong>How you handle this event matters, so don&#8217;t underplay it. In that moment your behavior, actions and emotions can either inspire people to follow you or lose their trust in you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valadon argues that when personal situations interfere with work life, leaders should treat them as opportunities for \u201cyour team to see another side of you and understand your priorities, values and who you are as a person\u201d. She adds: \u201cDon&#8217;t apologize for the interruption, but use it as a talking point with your team, inspiring people with your humanity and building a positive work culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">4. Aim for work\/life flexibility<\/h2>\n<p>As a leader, there might be times where work demands some extra effort. Occasionally, you might have to trade in some free time for a project that just has to be finished. But there will also be times in your life where you should prioritize your private life over your work life \u2013 when there\u2019s a baby on the way, for example, or if you\u2019re moving house, or having to take care of a sick parent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than having a very strict work\/life-balance, you should aim for the flexibility to prioritize one over the other depending on what the situation asks of you,\u201d says Thijs Launspach, a psychologist, TEDx and keynote speaker and author of<strong> <\/strong><em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Crazy-Busy-Keeping-Stressful-World\/dp\/0857089455\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=291T2N8Y2K0B5&amp;keywords=crazy+busy+thijs+launspach&amp;qid=1695293342&amp;sprefix=crazy+busy%2Caps%2C604&amp;sr=8-1\">Crazy Busy: Keeping Sane in a Stressful World<\/em><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo your team, you should lead by example,\u201d Launspach explains. \u201cDon\u2019t pretend that you\u2019re a super hero at work and outside of work. Be open about your own challenges in managing stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Launspach advises telling your team members that they shouldn\u2019t aim to avoid work-related stress as they couldn\u2019t even if they wanted to. Instead, they should try to manage stress in a healthy way \u2013 by including plenty of recovery time between stressful periods.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">5. Adopt a \u201cLife First, Always\u201d policy<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cPressure to perform can take a toll on even the most resilient of us,\u201d says Mimi Nicklin, founder of ad agency Freedm and author of <em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Softening-Edge-humanitys-leadership-changing-ebook\/dp\/B08GQ4Y9GK\/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=softening+the+edge+mimi+nicklin&amp;qid=1598610155&amp;sr=8-1-fkmr0\">Softening<\/em>\u202f<em data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Softening-Edge-humanitys-leadership-changing-ebook\/dp\/B08GQ4Y9GK\/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=softening+the+edge+mimi+nicklin&amp;qid=1598610155&amp;sr=8-1-fkmr0\">the Edge<\/em><em>. <\/em>\u201cWith the load unlikely to lighten, try working towards a \u2018life first\u2019 mindset to prioritize wellbeing, non-work related passions, and family within<em> <\/em>our \u2018always on\u2019 working world and not apart from it. This feels like a far more achievable goal and that becomes motivating unto itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Nicklin, a &#8220;life first&#8221; mindset means recognizing that your personal life and professional life are interconnected and that success in one area can, and must, positively impact another.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">6. Love yourself, warts and all<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt is impossible to genuinely connect with another human being if you are not being authentic,\u201d says Yetunde Hofmann, a portfolio non-executive director, author of <em>Beyond Engagement<\/em> and founder of the Solaris Executive Leadership Development Academy. \u201cAnd you cannot be authentic if you are putting on a mask at work and pretending to be a different person to who you are at home. Every domain of our life is interrelated: how you think affects how you relate \u2013 at home and at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Hofmann, leaders must trust themselves to be who they genuinely are, regardless of context. \u201cLeaders need to love themselves and come from a place of self-acceptance, warts and all,\u201d she says. \u201cIn self-acceptance comes self-care, understanding, knowledge and awareness.
