It plays a pivotal role in leadership because it allows leaders to better understand their team’s feelings, needs and concerns, thus enabling them to make more informed decisions and foster a more harmonious and productive work environment. Additionally, a Korn Ferry study revealed that among the various components of EI, self-awareness was a key distinguishing factor in high-performing leaders. While it is well established that EI is important for leadership success, can everyone develop it?<\/p>\n

Research suggests that EI is a trainable skill that can be enhanced through targeted interventions and coaching. For instance, a strategic leader can improve their emotional intelligence by practicing mindfulness, empathy and active listening. This not only helps in building strong relationships but also aids in managing conflict, adapting to change and leading through crises.<\/p>\n

Of course, life can serve as an EI development opportunity. For me, my emotional intelligence improved when we were blessed with a daughter. I became more aware of my reactions, subsequent actions and how I was influencing emotions around me. So it’s fair to say I got my EI skills upgraded thanks to my daughter.<\/p>\n
