Recreational marijuana isn\u2019t legal in the state, and a recent law passed by Gov. Ron DeSantis bans ads that promote recreational use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">On the national level, weed marketers are limited on digital platforms, and print poses difficulties as well, Cobb said. Some in the industry have turned to platforms like podcasts and OOH as workarounds, but Cobb found a different solution: hyper-local experiential campaigns tied to music or water sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">\u201cI can\u2019t think of a concert I\u2019ve been to where you didn\u2019t smell some weed,\u201d he told Marketing Brew. \u201cWe are not inventing anything there. We are just embracing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Swell idea: <\/strong>Founded last year, Sunburn Cannabis is named after \u201cOperation Sunburn,\u201d the federal investigation that brought down Florida drug smuggler Bill Cobb, Brady\u2019s father. Cobb said he inherited his \u201cpassion for the industry\u201d from his dad, but attributes his love of surfing and the ocean to his mom, who sent him to lifeguard camp when he was a kid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">Cobb said his own experience, plus the fact that \u201ccannabis and surfing have gone together for quite some time,\u201d inspired him to use water sports as a way to promote his company. And though he\u2019s been surfing since he was around the age of six, he needed someone else to help kick off that strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Surf\u2019s up: <\/strong>Enter Florida native and 2019 World Surf League champ Justin Quintal, who kicked off a partnership with Sunburn in July. Quintal said he uses medical marijuana for recovery as he trains, and that other pro athletes \u201care being more open\u201d about their own use.<\/p>\n<div class=\"style__InlineSubscribeWrapper-sc-8ccc5960-1 jArFiG\">\n<div id=\"inline-subscribe\" class=\"style__Container-sc-6fdcc87e-0 style__RoundedContainer-sc-6c630ac0-0 iTWzCH wGFGp\">\n<h5 class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 cVdxJM inline-subscribe\">Get marketing news you&#8217;ll actually want to read<\/h5>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 iEaGlZ inline-subscribe\">The email newsletter guaranteed to bring you the latest stories shaping the marketing and advertising world, like only the Brew can.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">While the relationship between sports and weed is at times fraught, the tide does seem to be turning. The NBA recently lifted its ban on marijuana for players, for instance, and CBD companies are buying up sponsorships across major leagues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">As part of his deal with Sunburn, Quintal promotes the brand primarily via his social accounts, according to Cobb. There are \u200b\u200bsome \u201crestrictions based on his primary surfing sponsors as to what can be on the board or what he can wear when he&#8217;s surfing,\u201d so Quintal can\u2019t yet rep Sunburn\u2019s logo during competitions, but Cobb said he\u2019s working to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Rock on<\/strong>: Music is another pillar of Sunburn\u2019s marketing. The brand recently hosted an event with Jacksonville-based band the Honey Hounds, and worked with reggae rock band Dirty Heads to set up a tent at their concert in Apopka, Cobb said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">While he can\u2019t hand out product at shows (as much as concertgoers might wish), he can bring merch like T-shirts and lighters and have people sign up to receive texts and emails from the brand, he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great way to meet people where they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\"><strong>Down the pipe: <\/strong>Ever since Quintal made his first post for Sunburn, Cobb said other surfers have reached out about wanting to partner, too, and he\u2019s considering moving forward with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">\u201cWe don\u2019t pick partners loosely,\u201d he said. \u201cWe pick someone that we want to grow with for quite some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5a46198a-12 ggMJgB\">The brand is also sponsoring Florida State\u2019s Excalibur Cup surfing contest in October, according to Cobb, and developing its own competition to ideally take place in the spring.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingbrew.com\/stories\/2023\/08\/29\/not-inventing-just-embracing-a-florida-cannabis-brand-s-approach-to-experiential-marketing?utm_source=&#038;utm_medium=syndication&#038;utm_campaign=feed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With 11 stores across Florida and two more to come by the end of the year, medical marijuana dispensary Sunburn Cannabis needs to promote its brand one way or another.
